I created this piece in response to a fold out ‘flyer to poster’ brief that dictated I use folding techniques and spot colour printing to produce a design for a festival or event for an event of my choice.
In designing this fold out flyer for the Environmental Film Festival Australia, I aimed to produce a design that reflects the spirit of the festival while incorporating sustainable printing and production practices in line with the festival’s values. Rooted in a vision of collective activism, the festival uses film to examine the relationships between people, cultures, companies and the natural world, while connecting audiences to avenues for further action through panel discussions, workshops and offerings from partner organisations doing similar work.
Drawing on the design work of Wolfgang Weingart, David Carson and Vaughan Oliver, I have used experimental typography combined with layered textures and a combination of diagonal, horizontal and vertical lines to create a composition that creates something new and evocative through the manipulation of existing forms. The use of grid paper and a map-like fold alude to the difficulty of finding solutions that will lead us to better, more sustainable futures.
The final result is risograph printed in teal and fluro orange ink on 80gsm recycled brown paper.
